It is possible to raise the eyebrows with the correct placement of Botox. Botox cannot raise the eyebrows by a centimetre, but it can raise the eyebrows by a few millimetres and even a few millimetres raise of the eyebrows can make you look more refreshed and relaxed, and as a bonus reduce the heaviness of the skin hanging over the upper eyelids.
However, if Botox is administered incorrectly then it can raise the eyebrows in a way that gives a startled unnatural look. I will discuss how the eyebrows can be raised to look natural and how to avoid the unnatural startled look ( also known as the Spock affect).
How to raise the eyebrows to give a natural relaxed look using Botox
There is a thin muscle covering your forehead called the Frontalis muscle, this is the muscle that when activated raises your eyebrows but also causes the horizontal lines on your forehead, these are often called worry lines. The frontalis has only one job, that is to raise your eyebrows. If someone who uses Botox and does not fully understand the anatomy of the facial muscles and places the Botox on the forehead incorrectly, then they would leave you with heavy eyebrows, that will not move and you will be very unhappy. However, when done correctly then it is possible to relax the Frontalis muscle, thereby making these forehead lines disappear but still allow the raising of your eyebrows.
There are also 2 muscle groups that when activated during normal facial expression lower (depress) the eyebrows. By using Botox on these muscles, they will relax and this will lead to your eyebrows being raised in a natural way.
The first of these muscles is named the Orbicularis Oculi and is a ring of muscle around your eyes. It allows you to close your eyes and is the muscle that causes Crows Feet. This muscle particularly drops down the tail of the eyebrow (the tails are the outside edge of the eyebrows). The correct use of Botox in this area can stop the tails dropping and thereby giving a natural raise to this part of the eyebrow. This is a treatment that I have done many times with my patients telling me that they notice the difference and are very happy with the result and always ask me to repeat the treatment at each session.
The other important muscle that when activated causes a depression of the eyebrows is the corrugator. This is the muscle that causes an angry look and vertical lines between the eyebrows, sometimes called “elevenses”. This is an area when treated with Botox the results are outstanding. The activation of this muscle causes the bulbs of the eyebrows to depress (the bulbs are the part of the eyebrows next to your nose), so correct treatment with Botox stops this depression and therefore causes the bulbs of the eyebrows to raise by a few millimetres
The correct administration of Botox to these different muscle groups can cause a natural looking raising of the eyebrows.
