Skin creams can be divided into two types, those that you can buy over the counter and those that are stronger and need to be prescribed by a qualified person.
Cosmeceuticals is the term used for products that can be bought over the counter that contain ingredients which are biologically active and can be applied to the skin. It is a term coined by the cosmetic industry for products containing chemicals that have medicinal properties. However, unfortunately these cosmeceuticals only contain low doses of the chemicals that have been scientifically proven to improve skin quality, they therefore will not significantly improve skin quality. Over the counter products like these are forbidden by law to contain higher ampunts of the chemicals that have been shown to definitely improve skin quality.
The problem is that the skin care market is a large market which makes some of the companies’ considerable profit and it seems that every few months a skin care company comes out with a “wonder cream”.
ZO Skin Health
This world famous skin care system used by many famous actors has to be prescribed by a qualified person (Doctor or Dentist) who has been trained in the use of the ZO products before they are allowed to prescribe them. This is why they are not available or advertised on the internet or in shops.
The ZO system for skin health has been developed by Zein Obagi to be tailor made to treat each person’s skin problems individually. This is the reason that ZO products can only be prescribed by trained professionals. It is illegal for ZO products to be sold over the counter or internet. ZO products when used correctly can make significant and noticeable improvements to skin health.
The basic premise of the ZO philosophy is that skin should be cleaned (exfoliated), not just superficially but deep down, this allows the range of treatment products to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, thereby promoting new skin development. The ZO system calls the initial phase of skin cleaning and the removal of dead skin cells “Getting Skin Ready”. This should be done twice daily. This “Getting Skin Ready” system leaves the skin looking refreshed in a way that normal skin cleansing cannot.
After the skin cleansing and removal of the dead cells the ZO system has a range of products that are used depending on the skin problem.
- Aged skin
- Pigmented skin
- Red skin
The vast majority of skin products only deal with the skins superficial surface (epidermis) and do not have the ability to penetrate deeper. In comparison the ZO products contain highly active ingredients that work within the deeper layers of the skin. This is important because the skin problems of ageing, pigmentation, acne etc. all originate in the skin’s deeper layers.
